Course Description

Discover the foundational elements of American Sign Language (ASL) in this self-paced course that focuses on mastering the manual alphabet to spell names and places and communicate common phrases. Through interactive video lessons and hands-on practice activities, providers will develop confidence in signing and gain an understanding of ASL’s importance in bridging communication gaps.

Louise Masin Sattler, Nationally Certified School Psychologist

Louise Masin Sattler is a Nationally Certified School Psychologist with a passion for supporting families in the Deaf and special needs communities. She earned her B.A. from the University of Delaware in 1981 and her M.S. from Penn State University in 1984.
Louise’s journey with American Sign Language (ASL) began at the University of Delaware, and she continued her graduate studies in School Psychology with a focus on Deaf education.
In response to the growing need for accessible sign language instruction, Louise founded Signing Families, a company dedicated to helping parents learn ASL to better communicate with their Deaf or special needs children.
A resident of Los Angeles, Louise shares her life with her husband and two adult children, all of whom are fluent in sign language.

She is the founder of Signing Families™, an instructional and training company specializing in helping first responders assist people who are Deaf.

Cancellation Policy: 

Continuing education courses are offered at no cost to contracted and employed Presence providers. In the event a course is canceled, the participants will have the option to attend a rescheduled event offered within 60 days of the canceled course.

Please note: Registered participants who register for live courses but do not attend or cancel with less than 24 hours notice may have future course registration restricted after three documented incidents.

Completion Requirements: 

To earn a course certificate, participants are required to complete the course, pass a quiz with 80% accuracy, (3 attempts are allowed), and complete a course feedback survey.

Objectives

Upon completion of this course, learners will be able to:

  • fingerspell words, including names and places, accurately using the ASL manual alphabet
  • sign numbers 0-30 for common scenarios such as quantities and number sequences
  • use beginner ASL vocabulary for greetings, introductions, and everyday interactions
